When To Use The "Long Arm" Pass Rush Move

August 7, 2018

If you're looking for a killer pass rush move to use against offensive lineman or any blocker who is unfortunate to be in your way, one move I recommend is what's called the Long Arm.

The Long Arm is a maximum contact pass rush move. Maximum contact means you want to engage the blocker with power and use your strength to make the pass rush move work. In contrast, a minimum contact move is usually a move that requires speed or finesse to win, like a speed dip, swipe, stab/club or something to that effect.

Edge Rushers: It's my opinion that in order for the long arm to be most effective, you don't use it as your primary pass rush move. Here's why:

Think of yourself as a "pitcher." In baseball, pitchers want to throw their fastball and have their secondary, or off-speed pitches work off of it. When a pitcher can throw a 94 mph fastball by the batter, the batter then gears up for the fastball mentally, only to be fooled by a 87 mph changeup or curveball the next pitch. Now that the pitcher has thrown both pitches varying in speed for strikes, the batter is less confident and, usually, unsuccessful at getting on base.

The thought is you want to command and dominate with your fastball before you try to throw anything else. In football, your speed rush is your fastball.

You need to be able to win with speed first and establish that rush into the blocker's head. Once you win with speed, blockers tend to abandon their technique in order to stay in front of you.

That's when the Long Arm is most effective. When you have an off-balanced blocker with poor leverage and technique trying like hell to stay in front of you, the long arm acts as your secondary or off-speed pitch, tossing them or walking them back to the QB for a sack.

Interior Rushers: The Long Arm is best used as a transitional move off your bull rush. it pairs well with a bull snatch (bull/pull) and one I would put in the toolbox for future use!
